Mission Specialist
A Mission Specialist (MS) is normally a
career NASA astronaut skilled in the operation of Space Transportation
System (STS) systems related to payload operations. The Mission
Specialist is familiar with the operational requirements and objectives
of the payloads. The Mission Specialist is proficient in both normal and
emergency procedures required for safe and efficient crew operations.
Usually, a Mission Specialist has prime responsibility for experiments to
which no Payload Specialist is assigned, and/or will assist the Payload
Specialist when appropriate.
